Privacy policy

Meme Bank is made by Edward Halvey, an individual developer in Perth, Western Australia. The short version: your bank stays on your iPhone. Something leaves your phone only when you share a meme as a link or tap Suggest a caption.

What stays on your phone

The memes, screenshots, videos and links you add, their titles, tags, folders and notes, your Show list, and everything Meme Bank reads from them (the words in a picture, what the picture shows, and what is said in a video). This reading is done on your iPhone with Apple's built-in tools. None of it is sent to the developer.

Photos access

Adding memes by hand uses Apple's photo picker, which only gives Meme Bank the photos you pick. Full Photos access is asked for only if you switch on Auto-scan, and the scan runs on your phone. Memes you make in the app are saved to your Photos, which needs "add only" permission.

Speech recognition

To make saved videos searchable by what is said, Meme Bank asks for Speech Recognition and runs it on your iPhone only.

Share links

When you tap Copy link on a meme, Meme Bank uploads that one picture (or, for a TikTok, Instagram or web save, the original link), its title and the first name you choose to show, to a server run by Supabase in Sydney, Australia. It creates a link that anyone who has it can open in a web browser. The link and its picture are deleted automatically after 30 days unless you choose to keep it, and you can delete it from the app at any time.

When someone opens a link, their browser keeps a random ID so a view and a 👍 or 👎 are counted once. We do not ask viewers for a name, email or account. Supabase keeps standard server logs, which may include IP addresses, for a short time for security.

Suggest a caption

On iPhones with Apple Intelligence, captions are written on the phone. Otherwise, when you tap Suggest a caption, the picture you are editing and the words found in it are sent through the developer's server to Google's Gemini service to write caption ideas. Google's free service may use this content to improve its products, so do not use it on private photos. An anonymous random install ID is sent so fair-use limits work; it is not linked to you.

What the developer collects

No accounts, no advertising, no analytics and no tracking. The developer can see the share links that exist (picture, title, first name shown, view and 👍/👎 counts) and daily counts of caption requests. Nothing is sold or shared except with the service providers named above.

Deleting your data

Delete a meme in the app to remove it from your phone and delete its share link. Deleting the app removes everything stored on your phone. To have share links removed by the developer, email the address below with the link.

Children

Meme Bank is not directed at children under 13.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new date.
